hi, If I make a sump with baffles for my equipment and water volume out of a 30 gallon aquarium, will splashing and salt creep be a big issue or do i need a cover?
also, how can you cushion the flow dumping into the sump?

Most sumps that I've seen do not have a cover. To allow for power-off "backflow" space, the sump won't be filled to the top anyway (I think mine is about 4 inches from the top).

I put a "U" at the end of my drain pipe (using a pair of 90 degree elbows), so that the drain empties upwards about an inch above the surface. There are probably many other ways to do it (perhaps some simpler), but with trial and error, this is what I came up with to lessen the noise and the bubbles.
