 I've had it! I came home today(yesterday) and as I stepped in with the kids I noticed everything had been rearranged. I quickly got the kids out, locked them in the car and called 911. Can you believe it took the police over 10 minutes to get here. Anyway, once they cleared the house we came in to survey the damage. Fortunately nothing too big got stolen. Unfortunately my whole jewelry box is gone. They also got away with our digital camera, my husband's coin collection and various other small items. The scary thing is they broke in through my 4 year old daughter's window. No fingerprints of course. We already cleaned up and replaced the window this evening. I finally collapsed at around midnight, but woke up with the 3:30 train and now can't sleep - they've stolen that too I guess. I really don't care that much about the money value - although it adds up quick. I'll just miss the pieces that had sentimental value . . . the necklace my Grandmother insisted I have before she died a year ago, my prom neclace, my Aggie ring, the heart necklace my Mom bought me in junior high. ~Sigh~ this is why drugs suck, they drive people to invade other people's homes. I may try to check out some local pawn shops later today.

I guess I shouldn't have horded all that purple string :o

Sorry to hear that. Although there were only a few items taken, I'm sure your family's sense of security has also been "robbed". I guess you can just be thankful that no one was hurt or that the house wasn't totally trashed.

Thanks for the sympathy, I'm definately thankful we weren't hurt and the house is still okay. As for the sense of security, we already wanted to move because we've come to expect this sort of thing in this neighborhood. In fact I had a handwritten letter sitting on the desk to the Mayor that I meant to email today about the state of the city. How ironic.

I am really sorry to hear that...If there is one thing that drives me wild it is THEFT...I had been seriously thinking about putting my jewelry in a safe deposit box..Looks like my mind is made up. Like you crime is on the rise here too...This used to be a pretty civilized place to live, but things are getting way out of hand..Cant even tell you how many drug busts and break ins I read about every day and we are only 150K population.

I think the major contributing factor is that our city receives 20 or so former inmates every Monday like clockwork. A mini-bus actually drops them off. The are released from a Super Jail about 45 mins from here. My city is the closest one with "support services" for those that have nowhere to go..Yippee... The one little shelter we had has grown to 3 and I cant even count all the "drop in" centers...Remember it is only 150K population! Our historic downtown has become a panhandlers paradise, our memorial square a popular place to deal drugs. Dont even ask about the library. I see them every morning hanging around the sidewalk..Not a single one of them with a pair of workboots.

The funny part is, I left my neighbourhood in Toronto to get away from this sort of thing. My old neighbourhood was NOTORIOUS for being extrememly dangerous (Dundas E. between Sherborne and Parliament). You simply didnt go out alone at any time. Mostly it was just dangerously unstable mental patients walking around, but the crack dealers have a strong foothold too...Oh, lets not forget all the strung out 15 year old hookers and the "customers" they attract...Add 26 shelters and a few of the biggest, oldest and worst Government housing projects and you got it all. The best part is, my studio still cost 250 K LOL!!!!

I think I am going to move to the country, put up a big electric fence and buy a few rabid dogs... ;)

My car had been broken into and I know that it isn't the same degree but you do feel a sense of being violated. It is a horrible feeling! Like you said, they stole your peace of mind. We did keep our valubles in a safety dep. pox at one point but found my wife had never got to enjoy her jewlery. Now we keep our valubles and wills extreamly hidden in our home and that the only person who knows other then ourselves is our son(incase something happens to us). We also have a home security system, 4 dogs. Not that an intruder would get as far as inside the house, but if they did they would have a 120 lb. bullmastiff charging at them, I know they wouldn't be very sucessfull. Not saying that 4 dogs is the answer for you but maybe one would be a deterrant to any intruder and you have the best companion ever while having your peace of mind again!
I hope this helps.

Best regards,

Terry.

So sorry to hear about that, fly.

I will commend you on a great reaction when you first stepped in. Fast thinking and well done.

Thanks Lila. LOL Imhandy2, unfortunately the dogs wouldn't fit in a 600sf house, and if they would they'd probably be the next "special" at a local barBQ. (no joke)

I am sorry to hear about that, my parents are thinking about getting a german sheppard (a dog not a German Sheep Farmer) to look after the house when my dads at work at night

Well Said, Rage would have taken over with me and i would have gone round looking for them, but then again we're not allowed to carry guns round here so there would be less chance of me getting shot.

ff--I am so sorry to hear this. I was robbed 2 years ago, and it is awful. And you'll keep finding things that are missing--we did for 3-4 months. It sucks. I didn't get back any of the sentimental things that were stolen, either.

Adding security locks to the windows helps. We also replaced all the door locks, since we couldn't verify that no keys were stolen. You will feel better about it, but it will take time. On a happy note--there weren't any fingerprints found at my house either, but the culprits were eventually caught--lived 3-4 houses down the road and they were unloading stuff they'd stolen from our house, with my husband standing in front of our house watching. So keep an eye out for that as well, especially if there's anything big enough to be easily noticable.

And, I hate to say it, but for the jewelry, check out the young girls in your area--I can't prove it's mine, but I've spotted a large white sapphire ring that was taken on a girl from down the street. And, get a lock box. A decent one, that can be bolted down from the inside, big enough to hold all your valuable jewelry and important papers. For ~$100, you can get one that can be bolted to the floor of your closet and is also fire proof. Worth every single penny.
