I bought a used 55 gallon with stand and it is my hospital tank..Usually when my fishes have some bacterial disease, I put it in the hospital tank..Now I am thinking that antiboitics will kill the good bacteria in the tank, so what I am saying is how is a hospital tank safe for a fish?

Most people don't use 55 gallon tanks for hospitals :) You must have some big fish if you need one that size.

You have to monitor the water and change it out every day so long as there is a sick fish or fishes in there.

Meds, even meds that should, don't always knock out the biofilter. That's why it's important to test the water often and change out when necessary. Good cycling practice :)

the hosital tank also does a couple of others things. It quarruntines the sick fish from the healthy population.

it also removes the sick/injured frish from the stress of the main tank. just like people in a hospital they need things done more frequently to privide the best healing situation.

while not spartan it should be set up so you can check on the condition of the fish. my present gourami likes to hide behind the filter, so i set up a mirror behind the tank a foot or so so i can check her without stresing anyone out.

Another factor to remember is bio-load. One fish in a 55 (unless it is pretty large) will not create the levels that many fish in an active tank do. You still need to constantly monitor and do necessary water changes but the levels should not skyrocket like they might in a standard set-up with a lot of fish.

One thing you might want to try if you are not overstocked in your other tanks, and it's what I do, is keep a healthy fish (in your case fishES) in the QT/Hospital tank that you can switch to another tank when you need to use it for a sick fish. That way it always stays cycled.

In my 2.5g tank I keep a mystery snail and in my 10g I keep a platy and a mystery snail. Any of those can be thrown into one of my other tanks as they get along with everyone.

what kind of fish do you have? Thats a very big tank to use as a hospital tank
Most prepackaged meds are packaged in 10 gallon doses. It will cost a fortune to med a 55 gallon tank.-Anne
