i have a freshwater tank with red ludwigia, aponogeton, and something i'm not sure of planted in mixed large and small smooth gravel. the tank is 30 gallons and 30x12x18. It came with an incandescent light which i understand is underpowered and not up to the task of providing for the plants my gf spontaneously purchased. is a 20w light okay for 3 plants, one of which we might be willing to remove? the 20w fluorescents are cheap and i would purchase a bulb that provided the correct sort of light. is this going to be enough? if not is there a solution under $100 CDN that would be?

You should be able to get a 30 inch flourescent bulb and strip for about $100 . A good 30 inch bulb should suffice. If your handy you could goto HOme Depot buy a single strip ballast kit, plug and wire for about $45 Can. (if there is a 30 inch size) Hagen makes a good lamp , the Power glo and Aqua glo are bright enough to sustain these plants. You might also want to keep the plants directly under the light for optimum penatration. I know how you feel wanting to grow plants. They make the aqaurium. I just put a 65 Gallon tank up and my advice is that if your going to spend money on anything it should be your light's .Don't go half a.. you may regret it later.

i have a 30g and i just use normal lamps with fluroscent bulbs 20w
