If I put my computer in sleep or hibernate mode, sometimes in the middle of night it will just turn on by itself.
What gives?? Anybody had this happen? Any suggestions?
I thought if a computer was in one of these modes, there was nothing going on. No processing, no power, no nothing.
Thanks for your help,

It could be waking because of certain things, wake on LAN activity, wake on usb activity, etc.

What kind of mouse do you use and do you have any free roaming pets? My mouse is USB and if a cat jumps on my desk and rattles it...
Also, do you happen to have any software set to work in the middle of the night? I don't know if that would send a WOL signal or not, but I know my virus scanner runs at 4 am so I don't have it slow down my gaming in the mornings.

Modern computers (like modern tv's) are never totally "off". That's why it's possible to wake up computers remotely. You might want to update your virus definitions and run a full scan, just to be safe.

If the was no power going on, it would be off. Sleep or hibernation is a low power consuption mode, so there is always some basic patterns runing, for example, the one that is waiting for your press-of-a-button to wake up the PC.
Also, look inthe mother board's BIOS/CMOS an auto on option. I have a computer with a TOMATO mainboard that is programmed to turn on at 7:30 am, so when I open the office at 8, it's running and the virus scan have been performed. :bday:

I shut-down my computer every night. There's no way in hell it could start back up again without me pushing the power button.

I think I figured it out.
125gJoe was right - Ghosts!!! J/K
I believe it was the wake on LAN activity setting that was turning the computer on. I checked this setting once before & it said off. I checked again today and it still said off but I dug a little deeper.
When I went to the Device Manager>Network Adapters>Properties>Advanced Tab>Wake Up Capabilities this setting was set to "Link Change". I changed it to off.
I guess I will find out tonight. Thanks for the help.

if you've got an optical mouse it could be as simple as hair/dust in the pickup moving in the air current. minor power spikes could do this as well. but I'm going to have to say ghosts :)

I live in a mid-floor condo and can bring my PC out of standby by stomping on the floor. ...or sometimes if a neighbor slams a door.
Harlock, I wish I could control when Norton AV runs its scan. Always seems to pop up in the middle of a fight with a nasty monster. I'm sure its an embedded setting somewhere, but I just can't locate it. :rant2:

Open the Norton antivirus interface, and look for the scans tab. Than, you'll see some pre scheduled scans. Edit them or delete them and create your own.

Even better, delete Norton, it's getting to be trash. They had some real security risks fairly recently involving roots.
For a nice, reputable and FREE (oh yes, I said Free!) anti virus program, check out AVG Free here (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1). That's what I use and I would recommend it highly.
EDIT: In case anyone was wondering about the Norton security problem here (http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,1910077,00.asp) is a relevant link.

That sounds familiar. On my last box, I could never get rid of Norton Protected Recycle Bin. Eventually I upgraded and reformatted the drive though.
I like Norton's real-time virus/worm protection, but it is a rather large presence in resident memory. There is also a clash with my Audigy 2 ZS sound board, so real-time prot. can't auto-initialize. On boot-up I have to wait a few minutes then "enable" real-time protection. Not a big deal, but irksome.
