View Full Version : The allures of fishkeeping

I am relatively new to the hobby, but was quickly swept into it. And I wondered why that was - so I thought about it. And I figured it might be fun to list some reasons why fishkeeping can be so addicting.

1. Keeping aquaria is a unique combination of the three major sciences. Physics to build a stand and balance a giant glass enclosure of water (also large scale filtering, plumbing, etc.). Chemistry to keep the water healthy. Biology - I think that's pretty clear.

2. Fish are not easily viewed in the wild. When put in the home, in clear water, behind a pane of glass - their world is revealed.

3. The entire universe of the fish is created by you, and it is apart from your world. They don't breathe your air, you don't breathe their water. They live in a tiny ecosystem you create and maintain. To use a trite phrase, you are playing god (in a more profound way than with, say, a dog).

4. Of course, striking colors and behaviors are fascinating. This is of course true with many pets.

5. This may sound a bit juvenile, but fishkeeping includes a lot of cool toys. Who can honestly say that setting up a large tank isn't fun? The project of it all is very appealing.

6. There is always room for expansion - larger tanks, more fish, etc.

7. A large fish tank is a peculiar piece of furniture. It can add grace and charm to a home, especially if well kept.

8. The process of keeping fish is somewhat like a lab experiment, and the fishkeeper is constantly educating him/herself.

9. Aquarists get all the girls.

10. I'm sure you guys have some ideas......................

Hello DamonCrockett, you have some excellent reasons for fishkeeping. For me, I cannot agree with number six. At 125 gallons, it's the limit here... Of course, that was not my decision, but rather my concession.

:D

One that I am appreciating more and more, since my tanks are currently in storage, but the tanks are awesome humidifiers in arid parts of the country. Much prettier than a standard unit!

And...The soothing sounds of moving water.

I also disagree with #9. Remember there are also lots of aquarist girls too.

And here I was thinking that maybe that's why I get so many looks from chicks...
