I'm setting up a SA biotope tank, and I have red flourite for substrate. I was wondering if this would be too sharp for cories? I don't want to put them in there then have them rub all their barbels off on the substrate. Has anyone had success doing this?

i was just about to ask the same question plus a little bit extra.
like my tank is very heavily planted with no substate free would corys be ok in a tank like that?
:OT:
i have been told that they are ok and should be any problems as long as the ammonia etc is 0 then is barbels are cut then they will just heal back not shink away.
lets see what other say :)
I can tell you my setup. My cories are 3 going on 4 years old, have successsfully bred twice, get fed a variety of sinking food tablets, and I use fairly rough pea stone from a garden store. Their barbs have been absolutley fine the whole time. My ammonia and nitrite are always zero and I do at least a 30% water change each week with gravel vacuum. The tank is planted (medium at this point).

the problem with flourite I see is that its not particularly rough, but the edges of all the grains look to be fairly sharp angles. Its more like chips than rounder pieces of gravel or peastone. It seems a lot less dense than gravel though, so maybe it wouldn't be as bad? Still not sure...

I got flourite red a few months back and my cories have been fine on it.

If i may recommend a forum search ? There have been many questions and posts concerning this issue - including from myself and most people say that its not the substrate that causes barbel problems in cories but bad water quality or filthy substrate.
I would agree with that. Nothing is much sharper than my pea stone.
