Hello. 3 days ago my Red Wag Platy began to give birth - I was very excited! But.....what ended up happening is that the first fry seemed to get stuck half-way out.....it was stillborn and didn't look quite normal. About 6 hours later, the fry finally became unattached when the mom rubbed against my net. Since then, mom seems so-so. She is not as energetic as before and her appetite is down. But, labor is hard work so I was hoping that she just needs time to recover? Can anyone explain to me what happened????? She seemed fine......is this common in fish - to have fry get stuck? What should I have done? Will she have more babies? Any info would be very appreciated! Jenni :(

My red wag platy mom died as a result of giving birth. I checked all my parameters and thought I had surely killed her with new-tank syndrome, but I had no big amount of ammonia, nitrate, or nitrites, so I was stuck/lost. I thought for a while that she was just sick- she had been acting funny for a while, which I now realize was due to her being so pregnant. I didn't even realize she had given birth until several days after she died when I started to see the little fry hiding in my plants.

All four of them are doing fine, it seems. They seem to be hiding just fine from the red wag dad and the two silver mollies, so I guess the plants are doing their job.

So to quick-answer your question:
I guess it's possible for fishes to have labor troubles, just like it's a risk any time you have a pregnant dog, cat, etc.
