I have a very serious agression problem in my tank of mollies. In total, there are 3 males and 1 female. One of the males (the biggest one) has turned extremely agressive towards his tank mates. He will constantly chase and bite them. One of the males is so exhausted and traumitized he is just sitting at the bottom of the tank, gasping and dying. I think he is trying to protect the 'his' female from the other males. Surprisingly, when I first got him, he was sooooo shy. That was when I had 4 females and 4 males. They have now died due to a disease in the tank which has now been treated. What should I do? I fear that both the smaller males will die of shock and exhoaustion. However, maybe that's not such a bad thing as then the agressive male will calm dow without any other males interfering with him and his missus! Please help.

By the way, the mollies are all different varietys.

getting more females might help... what size tank are they in? Other tankmates? what is the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate?

The tank size is 18 gallons. There are no other tankmates. I don't know the amonia and nitrate/nitrite levels as I don't have a test kit! Please don't have a go at me. I don't think it's to do with that anyway. I will diefinately get some more females as soon as I can in a few days though. But for now, what should I do? I have a spare tank where I can put the other male fish, but I have no heater and I'm no way buying a new one. They're expensive! Should I section off a part of the tank instead?

In that case I would consider returning the fish. I don't mean to be negative, but if you can't afford a heater (which is a necessity for mollys and any other freshwater fish) you will not be able to properly care for the fish. You should at least have the water tested by your LFS to rule out water problems. That is the first thing to consider when you are having problems, and if you don't have test kits you can't be sure there is not something wrong!!

Fishy13 why don't you ask your parents to buy a heater and a test kit for you? It should come out to about $50 and you will get a good quality heater + all the tests you need for a few years. Both these items are essential for keeping fish in good health.

Fine, but it might take a bit of persuasion...
By the way, I noticed that the agressive male ws trying to MATE with the other male? Is he just gender confused or WHAT?!

Hmmmm...I think that Holly thinks I have no heater at all! I do have one for my tank, a very good none, I just don't have one for my spare tank I wanted to use.

What's 50 dollors in pounds? I'm from England. Is it something like £40? Or is it more?
