Clown loaches, 3 1/2-4 inches, 4.99!
Lol on the zebra plecos Clay, ya had me goin there for a bit !
I found a beautiful irredescent green male guppy with a beautiful cobra type tail....bought it for my daughter's tank...unfortunately, the lady at the register put it on the scanner....and then duncie me wasn't paying attention when I left the store and forgot to hold it over the door scanners....needless to say, it lasted about a day and a half...
Dang, it was one of the prettiest guppies I ever did see....and I don't even LIKE guppies !!
I also find an occasional betta worth buying there from time to time, though I'm no longer looking for more of those.

I saw 2 clown knife fish there once...didn't get them becasue I knew I didn't have enough tank space for them. Not to say that whoever eventually bought them did either...

I've found a few good fish. I had a gourami that lasted a year with 20 deaths, and 3 fish tank moves..also a good betta. I got him when he looked dead, brought him literally back to life, and he lasted a year and a half. He died because his fins got torn and they never grew back(that happened shortly after I got him)..Walmart isn't my favorite place to buy fish though.

Just curious - are these dangerous to guppy health ?

They told me that when I bought my female betta from wal-mart. So now I'm wondering, if the scanners kill fish, what do they do to us?

Can I just say, my heart literaly just jumped into my throat and you almost had me running to the car to my local walmart just to see if they happen to be carrying them! but then I kept reading!
My LFS just got 2 zebra plecos in and I really wanted one but at 40dollars a pair and a college semester about to kick off on monday I really needed the money for books!
Good catch on the betta though!

$40 a pair is dirt cheap. Go buy them and put them on aquabid, you could get $200 easy for 2 fish.

Thats why i originally asked - EMG is there any material out there offering a bit more detail on why this is ?
My local walmart doesnt carry fish - maybe thats why i never came across that yet.

I found my characidium at Wal-Mart. I still have it and have yet to see another one anywhere. I paid $1.60 for an oto since they didn't have a clue what it was. Not that it's worth lots of money, but it is quite uncommon.

News to me too!
"What sort of effect, if any, do department and pet store security scanners have on live aquarium life? I'm referring to the scanners at the entrances/exits of the store that go off when you buy something that isn't properly deactivated at the register.
I work in a Wal*Mart and there seems to be two different beliefs among the cashiers. Most of them believe that the door scanners do something to the live fish and snails that results in them dying shortly after leaving the store, the most frequently cited effect being that the scanners somehow electrocute or "scramble" the fish. These cashiers tell customers to hold the fish over their heads in order to keep them out of the scanners' reach.
The rest of the cashiers believe that if the larger pet stores don't warn people about this potential danger, there's no reason to worry about the scanners somehow killing the fish; however, based on experiences with giant pet stores, it is entirely possible that the cashiers don't know about these dangers, or simply don't care. Of course, there's the other side...

Finding female bettas at a wal-mart that don't turn out to be young males is a pretty good find.

You really had me about the plecos, too. :joke: Before I bought my 29 tall I was really trying to get a much bigger tank so that I could have a pleco
(I've ALWAYS wanted a pleco: )
Unfortunately, The 29 tall was the absolute biggest tank that would fit against the wall that I would need to put it on! Didn't want it near the window
