society tank with some Aulonocara_eureka and Labidochromis_caeruleus "Yellow from Lake Malawi, and some Thorichtys_meeki (Firemouth) from Central America:

can they be kept togther?

or

A pair of Labidochromis_caeruleus "yellow" (wonderful yellow color), Malawi
One male and two females of Sciaenochromis_ahli (blue), Malawi
One male and two females of an Aulonocara eureka
a pair of Pseudotropheus
they be kept together in a 30 gallon or 40

First combo I would avoid since the Firemouth needs different water parameters than the aficans

On the seond combo depends on the Pseudo's, some are much more aggressive in my experience

I had a beautiful tank with an electra and yellow tangerines and some assorted others (about 6) then my heater broke and I woke up with fish sticks (pardon the anology)..

Mbuna (all Pseudotropheus) are polygamous and keeping "pairs" rarely to never works. males are in constant spawning mode and if only a single female is available, she will be harrassed to death. you need a single male and 3-4 females in order to dilute the males spawning aggression.

Haplochromines and Aulonocara rarely do well in a tank of Mbuna. the latter are just too belicose and 'busy' for the more placid Victorians. moreover, from a dietary standpoint, Mbuna are nearly strict vegetarians and Haps and Aulonocara need much more protein in their diet. in fact, the amount necessary to sustain them will ultimately kill (bloat) Mbuna.

Central or South American cichlids ... some will survive a tank of Africans but most will not. as with haps and Aulonocara, their dietary requirements are different as is their optimum water chemistry. most importantly however may be the fact that cichlids from different locals don't speak the same language. so when an african cichlid displays and says "get outta my space" this behaviour may not be understood by a CA cichlid and the resulting lack of 'retreat' can lead to fighting, stress, death.
