I am starting a 150 Gallon tank to possibly breed Zebra Pleco's the L046's I would sell them for 40-80 Each, Before I order the tank and Fish I would like to see if there is a General interest for them as this would be an expensive venture to do, let me know

I'd definitely be interested if I lived in the States. >_< Would you be able to send them across the border?

as long as it's not against the laws.

you definitely have a market... but they apparantly very difficult to breed... what are your guess at your success rate?

First pairing maybe 15% fry survival, next close to 80% survival, they say Ghost knives are hard to breed, I am looking into them as well

Nope.

They're beautiful fish, but I can't pay that much for one.

just wanted to give you a differing opinion. :p:

How do you breed plecos?

Ghost_knife
02-09-2006, 8:06 PM
you have to be sure on the gender of the pleco in question, then let nature take its course, with Zebra you need caves

Don't get me wrong; the price your selling them at is awesome. Its a ton cheaper than what I've seen prieviously. A zebra pleco is just a bit out of my price range for now. :)

I'm looking into it, I found a cool article on it but finding a Female knife is terrible, I found one on ebay but the lady would not ship her, kinda sucks because you cant tell untill they are about a foot long on what sex they are

Do you actually have any zebra plecos? I'm not trying to be rude, but have you seen the latest prices on Aquabid? You would have to be rich just to purchase a breeding group, then spend over a year's time trying to get a spawn and raise them to a size suitable to sell. You would be losing money unless you already have a bunch of L046's tucked away that you have failed to mention.

*Edit to say that I hope my post wasn't taken the wrong way. My intention wasn't to be rude, although I realize it could be taken that way after rereading it.

I have entertained this idea for quite some time and have saved for them, I have over 6500 to play around with to get the tank filter lights stand fish substrate caves etc, I get Zebras from time to time from a few places but always sell them because people who see them want them so I sell them from my tanks, I diddnt take your post as rude, No worries, Thanks for all the replies, I am going to place the order for the tank and filter next week,

Well I would buy one assuming you could breed them. Just out of curiosity what makes you think you can breed them? Have you breed hard to breed fish before? Are you gonna be buying the pairs from seperate places to assure they are not related I dont really want inbreed fish. BTW I am not trying to be rude at all just wondering?

Ghost_knife

I do plan on buying them from 3 diffrent breeders from various online places, I have not bred pleco's before but some of my other fish I have had some success with, nothing as hard as Zebra's mind you, but I think I can have sucess with it, I hope that answers some of your questions,
