Media Options other than charcoal

Does anyone have any good media options other than charcoal?

I have a Magnum 350 and a Penguin 400. I thought I saw something about ceramic balls for one of these filters, is this a feasible option? Different sponges, filter floss, etc. I am curious what others are using.

I just use the filter sponge and a cartridge with peat granules.

In my Aquaclear 70s in one I have a sponge, cotton fiber,purigen,bioballs. The second one has the same except no purigen.

The cannister filter will have the sponges, cotton fiber,bioballs and purigen.
