I have a 45g long with a population boom of convicts....the only other fish are three kenyi's.....other then seperating males and females...how can I keep the population down? Is there a certain kinda fish I can put in there to help out ?

my best advice is to get a good sized pleco and when they lay eggs shut the light off and the pleco will clean them off, most of the time.

Separate the males and females. They will breed consistantly forever and ever and ever and ever. It's in thier nature. Even if you did find a fish to "clean up" some of the babies, it will get beat up by the cons no matter how big it is, AND the cons will be under stress from constantly chasing the intruder away. That aside, I am suprised both that none of the kenyis have gotten killed and that the kenyis havent taken out some of the fry.

I have the same luck with placos. If they dont eat the eggs they get to the babbies when the parents are asleep.
The lights have to be off or the placo will get pumbled.

after thinking about it a placo is a short term answer your fish will never be happy. You shouold seperate them for best results.

Thanx for all the imput peeps....I decided to give a numerious amount to my friend who has a huge oscar....she'll be appreciative of all the "treats" I 've sent her...lol. I will send her as many as I can until my tank is inder control again, about once a week I think. My LPS has also accepted a couple dozen of the older babies. The tank is thinning down quite nice now. I had a pleco in the tank at one time....but "DAD" the convict he is...lol....took him out ...poor guy...never even found traces of him in there. The kenyi's....surprisingly, have never been picked on by my pair of cons, but they sure like to change their colours often. One day I have what looks like two male and one female....and the next it looks like they're all male.....they change from the original blue striped to yellow stripped....wierd....can anyone tell me why this is????
