I have a sick jack dempsey that I did not expect to live this long, but he's still hanging on. He has been gasping for air for a long time but other than that looks good. The other fish in this tank are not doing this. I added more movement to the water surface but it doesn't seem to help. His gills do not look discolored. A little over a week ago, he quit eating and started getting weaker. He eventually started to turn sideways and I put him in a hospital tank. I have been treating with maracyn I and II with no sign of improvement. I have no idea what else to try so I bought clout. Can anyone please tell me if I should treat with this, and what are your experiences? I have read this is a last resort medication and will either treat or kill your fish? What are your thoughts?

I have not used Clout myself, but my LFS expert tells me all the time not to use it unless I have a fish on his last leg and no visible symptoms. Basically like you said, it's a last resort med. I thankfully have never had much issue with disease/illness, i QT all new fish for 14 days, and my showtanks are very well maintained. Also, quite frankly, if a fish starts acting oddly, sickly, or otherwise abnormal, doesnt respond to hospital/salting/temp treatment and hes not over $5 bucks, I generally euthanize rather then buy expensive meds. Last i checked, JDs are pretty inexpensive fish. Just my 2 cents.

P.S. Good to see you on AC boards, Gunny.

clout is pretty harsh, I haven't used it for years but when I did it worked my fish over worse than any other med I've ever tried. A dempsey should handle it as well as anything will in all honesty. Since he is already in a seperate tank, it might be worth a try.
That being said: IS this a new fish? Parasites generally have to be introduced, so I would lean towards Bacterial or fungal problem unless the fish is new or some other introduction method has happened recently. Clout leans heavily on the side of parisite treatments (although I don't remember everything it contains) So the broadband Anti- bacterials and anti Fungals would be the route I'd take Rather than Clout. Either way it's a crap shoot I realise, Just my two cents on the situation.
