I have 2 koi and a goldfish in an aquarium inside. Technically because my pond leaked too close to frigid weather and I intended on winterizing them indooors. But now I don't know if I want to put them back out! I love watching them any time of day or night. They are now in a 30 gall. but I can go up to a 55 for the space I have. Is this truly horrible? I will put them out if this is detrimental but I would appreciate suggestions or opinions. Aside from building an indoor pond (which is not out of the question) what would be the next best thing? The koi are 8 in an 5 in. the shubunkin is 4 in. My amon. nitrite and nitrates are 0 and my ph is 7.8. thank you for your thoughts

They will sadly outgrow even your 55 gallon fairly quickly. Koi are big water fish, not aquarium fish. Will they survive? Yes for awhile at least. Will they thrive? No probably not. It will be increasingly difficult to maintain the water quality the bigger they get. In fairness to your koi they should go out in the pond.

I have goldies inside in a 75 gallon and it is great fun to watch them. I wintered some koi over this winter. In a 300 and 600 gallon tank respectively. Hopefully next winter I will have a 3000 gallon tank to overwinter everyone.

thanks for your input. the last thing i want to do is jeapordize my fish. I appreciate your honesty and will put them back out in a few weeks until I have an appropriate indoor setup.

Realize that once you've taken them in for the winter they do have to stay in until the outdoor pond temps warm up. Mine will be in their small tanks for quite some time as they are heated and the pond.... well lets just say it's still cold out there...

I agree with frloplady. Koi can get up to 2 or more feet with proper conditions so keeping them indoors would not be in the best interest of the fish. If you must keep them indoors bigger is always better. I wouldn't keep the koi in anything smaller than 1000 gallons but that is me.

When you move them back outside make sure your pond water and indoor tank water are close to the same temp otherwise you risk loosing your prized fish. Not sure where you are at but here it is April before the pond is warm enough to add the fish. I usually wait till May though just so I can monitor the current pond fish and make sure everyone is still healthy.
