Normally I turn my tank light on when i get home from work, and turn it back off just before bed, prolly a little after midnight. i have read that you should turn the light on during the day and off at night. But if i did this my light would always be on when i wasn't at home, and never on when i am just sitting around the house relaxing. Can this actually cause a problem?

If it isn't in a huge amount of daylight, it really isn't going to matter. (Aquariums shouldn't be in direct light anyway.) The fish need some light and some dark, but I don't think they care about the actual time. Also, you could get a light timer... it's a really simple thing that you plug the light into.

It's no fun to have an aquarium if you never get to see it. So I'd say, 10-12 hours of light max, and it doesn't matter if the dark period is during the middle of the day.

Unless you have live plants, it doesn't matter when the light is on.
