View Full Version : Lime or Crushed Coral?

So I went to Petco to see if I could get some crushed coral to put in my canister (my kH is about 2 and I want to raise it in preparation of co2 injection). So the guy there suggested I use one of these lime formation things to raise my kH. He cautioned me that it might raise too much and to be careful. Thus I convinced him the crushed coral was the better option so I could adjust the amount as needed. So yay he gave me some!

Anyway I wondered if lime is ok to use for the function as I had never heard of it? He seemed to know what he was talking about every time I go in there (no one else there knows as much as he does)...and he told a customer that the fish she wanted really couldn't live in a fish bowl as she wanted...so that was really good. But I'm still curious about the lime.

Anyway I successfully added my coral to my filter. I'm still in the learned process as in my messing with it one of the tubes came off and water once again went *everywhere*. But hey I'm learning a lot through these mistakes. My cats think its great. They had puddles to play in.

Lime seems to me....well....risky. Stay with the coral.

lime is calcium hydroxide and thus cannot raise your KH since it is NOT a carbonate molecule. it will elevate your pH and GH but coral is certainly the far better (and more stable) way to go.

Thanks guys. I'm glad I didn't go with it. I forgot I posted this as it was just before the forum went down.
