sadly.I think as long as there is a market. Wal-mart will continue to do business as usual.
I think if the staff were properly trained and they were allowed time to maintain the tanks..we would see a different situation. but as long as they see payroll as one of the best ways to reduce costs...LOL

I lifted this from another thread (and forgot the author...sorry!). I work for Walmart and am scheduled 1-2 days a week in the fish department. I do my level best, but I'm pretty "green" myself. I try to educate those who are willing to learn on such basics as the nitrogen cycle, feeding, water changes and fish compatibility. Still get people wanting 20 comets to put in their kid's tank so when some die they won't notice. :rant2:
I would like some thoughts and ideas on some issues we are having in the tanks though. The tropical side is 2 banks of 9 tanks, approx 10 gallons each. They are filtered by a sump and all 18 tanks dump into the same sump. The filter is a bio-wheel followed by a coarse filter pad followed by a fine filter pad filled with carbon. The water then goes through a UV sterilizerThe filter pads are checked Sun, Wed, Fri and changed on Mon. In between times they are rinsed if needed. Mon and Fri 8oz of aquarium salt is added. Mon they also get "toxic soup." It is fish day and the following chemicals are added (not MY idea!): salt, ick cure, melafix, start right, stress coat and maracyn(sp?). Most of these are added to the sump before the sterilizer, so I'm not thinking much makes it through that. So, after all that. We have currently 5 tanks with ick. The tanks house mollies, platys, black tetras, pacus and bala sharks. Not all one tank, but the main fish in each of the 5 tanks. My thoughts are to quit with all the meds and such and let the fish BREATHE! Maybe up the salt a bit (but cories, cats and plecos?) and get the heat up closer to 82 or so. Anything else that can be done for these guys? I know many of you think that Walmart shouldn't sell fish (and I agree), but since it isn't likely to happen, I'd like some help in taking care of the ones I can in the best way possible. Any thoughts (not flames please)?

Just curious, do you still sell fish from the tanks that have ick?

I know you can't help it. Its kind of strange because one Walmart where I live has an absolutely disgusting fish section, usually half the tanks have signs on them not to sell from the tanks. I wouldn't ever buy fish there.

The other Walmart (fairly new) actually has a nice fish section. I was actually very surprised last time I was in there. Extremely clean, no dead fish, very healthy looking fish. I have never bought there, but I think I would actually consider buying from that particular Walmart if I ever couldn't find a particuar fish somewhere else.

I don't think that Walmart will stop selling fish. If people buy them, Walmart will sell them.

Good luck! I know that must be an impossible situation to deal with.

No, they are marked as do not sell. Our tanks *were* nice, I'm not sure what is going on with them lately. It is becoming really frustrating, wondering where the ich will pop up next. It is strange too, in some of the tanks all the fish get it, in others only one species does.

Good luck! I know that must be an impossible situation to deal with.

The people who want to learn and try to do their best mostly make up for the idiots and jerks. The head butting with management over what I need for the fish is pretty sucky though. I buy them veggies and treats on my own. Tin foil barbs LOVE cucumbers!

It's good to hear from someone that cares at Walmart. I'm back in the hobby after a long siesta, so I really don't have too much to add. I think that if the meds are added to the sump, the carbon may remove alot of it. (If the carbon is changed out every week or two that is). I do wish you luck , and I'm sure the cucumbers are greatly appreciated! Keep it up!

At least those fish have someone like you who cares about them. I'm sure they get very excited about the goodies you bring them.
