I've read about mystery snails playing dead. Do they do close up when they do this or have they been known to play dead leaving their "door" open? We have two mystery snails that we bought on Monday night. One crawled about six inches right when we put it in the tank and hasn't moved since. The other never crawled around but would open and close, until this afternoon. Both of them are half open and not moving at all - even when the cory catfish come sniffing around them or run into them. Are they playing dead? Are they dead? What?

Snails might hide in their shell for a day or two due to stress, but for much longer they'll risk starving.
Here's a bulletproof test: take one out and smell it. If it smells like a rotten egg, then it's time to remove them from the tank.

Do the test soon. You don't want a dead Mystery in your tank, that's for sure.

I had one die in my oranda tank and the ammonia and nitrite spike was HORRENDOUS, not to mention what THAT did to the goldies.

Good old "sniff test"!
