I was at my local Willowdale Aquarium Society meeting last night, we meet once a month, anyways this old guy brought in some plants to auction off. He had some sords, grasses and some Riccia. I couldn't believe my eyes. He had been into this for years and its just his hobby. His plants were so healthy and vibrant looking that they looked like they were straight from tropica. Well, he had 2 bags of riccia and I bought one bag for $3. I 'm not sure if it was fluitans or dwarf but this bag had 4 big chunks each being larger then a golf ball. I asked him about his success with his plants and he said he grows them in dixie cups with potting soil and some gravel on top and submerged of coarse. He used no ferts and I think even that his lighting was low tech. Long story short, it was a good meeting.

Wow, that's awesome. I'm sure there's a nitrogen source for the plants there in that potting soil.

I guess he doesn't have to worry too much about side affects of using potting soil since he doesn't have fish.
