Hiya,

Got the dreaded brown fur appearing in my tank...which i was hoping to avoid. It's only growning on my plants so I am wondering if perhaps a SAE or other type of algae munching fish might do the job?

I think I have sufficient light, maybe not sufficient CO2 but that will be remedied in the next couple of days.

Meantime what does everyone suggest i do to help fix the problem?

Oh, forgot to mention tank and plants have only been set up for roughly 2 weeks so am still going through the cycling process.

cheers.

See the sticky at the top of the page.
Look through it and check out the IDs on the different types of algae so you can be sure what you have. Without knowing exactly what you have we can be of no assistance.

I did have a look at the sticky before posting but my algae doesn't look like any of the pics. I think maybe it's fuzz or brush??? combination of both maybe?
All I know is that it is only affecting my plants, it's not on the gravel glass or affecting the water at the moment.

I could maybe try and take a pic of it when i get home from work if this would be a help??? Not sure how well it'll turn out though.....

Please help with algae problem

As I said I'm not entirely sure what type of algae this is although i think it might be fuzz or hair???

I've attached some pics of it now so if anyone can help identify type and suggest a course of action to fix it I would really appreciate it

Anything on your glass or rocks? Looks alot like diatoms.

Snoozie -
I came here for the exact same reason. I have a similar looking brown growth on my amazonian sword, no where else in the tank. The LFS only advice was to treat it with a chemical to kill the algae, ummmm... NO don't want to put them in my tank.

If I find anything I will PM you, please do the same if you find anything.

I'm going through a cycle too, and have the beginings of a similar thing on my Stricta, can someone tell me what Diatom is?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diatom
"Diatoms are a major group of eukaryotic algae, and are one of the most common types of phytoplankton. Most diatoms are unicellular, although some form chains or simple colonies. A characteristic feature of diatom cells is that they are encased within a unique cell wall made of silicate. These walls show a wide diversity in form, some quite beautiful and ornate."

"Forms in soft brown clumpy patches. In the freshwater aquarium, these are usually diatoms. Usually indicates a lack of light or an excess of silicates. Increased light levels will usually make it disappear. Easily removed by wiping the glass or siphon vacuuming the affected area."

You need to increase your wpg (watts per gallon), or, learn to like brown :D
