Defiantly get a new stand for that tank. Not only are you looking at the problem of damaging the bottom of the tank, but also that sounds like it would be rather unstable. I recommend buying a nice stand for it unless you have the time, space, money and talent to build a stand. I love restoring old furniture and decided to build my own stand for my 29-gallon tank. If I had known then what a pain it would be, I would have just bought one. Between the designing, getting the supplies (which you are always forgetting something), measuring, re-measuring, cutting, waiting for glue to dry, waiting for the many coats of sealer to dry (so any spilled water won’t get into the wood), and then draining, moving, and refilling the tank (which REALLY gets on the fish’s nerves), it will drive you nuts. Another problem is that if any of the measurements are off just a little, it can cause the tank to lean. My stand turned out perfect and made a very nice addition to a bedroom set I had restored, but I could have gotten the same results if I had bought a stand and just refinished the front.
