Hi

I am less than 3 months into my first aquarium, first cichlid tank and noticed on Saturday morning that one of my female was getting jiggy with two of the males with a red zebra trying to get into the action as well. The female has got a mouthful of eggs so I separated her into another tank with another female lombardoi.

Can anyone offer advice on what I should do next ... should I leave her until she spits the fry out or should I wait one to two weeks and remove them from her mouth, returning her to the cichlid tank???

Any advice would be appreciated

Its best to let her spit naturally, as you run the risk of damaging her pectoral fins during the stripping (also its very stressful on the mom). Sometimes however, its advisable to strip the female, such as if she is holding for so long her health is at risk.

I would put her in the tank where you want to keep the fry and just let her spit naturally, especially if this is her first time :) Be careful when transferring her - always keep her underwater - as she may easily spit out the eggs if she gets scared in the net.
