Throw away sintered glass in favor of plastic?

I'm about to stop using siporax, under the assumption that its pores clog after a period, and use plastic media in my eheim pro-canister instead. The assumption being that it's cheaper and just as effective in the long run. And I'm going to keep the plastic pieces in their net bag --despite Eheim's warnings against this. (I assume they warn against fine mesh and not the coarse net that keeps the floating plastic pieces from scattering).
Does this sound okay and would you switch to plastic media? Are there disadvantages and can I expect noise-free and effective bio-filtration from my canister, despite my ignoring Eheim's recommendations? Thanks
