I have an african cichlid, not sure what kind. It's blue w/black bars (about 7) that extend part-way up the dorsal fin, his size is about 2 inches long, no other spots or colors anywhere else. The tank is 10g w/rocks, coral, shells, and a couple of plants. Should I keep him alone? My lfs man says they are happier alone, but it seems to me there should be another. :girl:

NO no no... not in that size tank! These guys need at the very least a 30 gallon! I'm afriad he will not reach his full size potential in a 10 gallon, and will likely remain stunted in a smaller tank :(.
They are noramlly very social fish, and are definately NOT happier alone, however you cannot add anymore to that tank. He/she will likely kill any new one when they are introduced.
BTW... does it look like this?

if you want to see him more happy, just research on the kinds of food you can feed him as a snack. Or invest in some feeder fish, always fun watching him hunt his food.

Please don't listen to this advice...
He needs a bigger tank with other fish and the basic African Cichlid amenities.
If a bigger tank isn't in your future, I would suggest trading him in at your LFS for some nice 10 gallon community fish.

Geeze dont give advice if you dont know anything about the fish!
These fish are vegetarian, and need a diet high in vegetable matter such as spiraluna. Feeding them feeder fish will kill them! Ack! :thud:
Anyhooo... that fish is a Maylandia/Metriclima lombardoi, or AKA kenyi. They are all born blue like that, and the males turn yellow and the females stay blue. At 2" though if it was a male it should be starting to turn... but you never know in such a small tank.
Are you able to upgrade for it?
