View Full Version : Help! Gotta buy a bigger tank...
My Mom wants to buy my 55 gallon tank, so I want to get a bigger tank (75-100 gal?). I've never had a tank bigger than 55 gallon and am wondering if it needs special filtration etc. (Bio Balls? Canister??) I only have a six-outlet strip available in that area. Also if anyone knows how to get/build a cheap but sturdy stand, please let me know...

There are a lot of tanks that have the same length as a 55. I believe the 75G is the same size only taller. Check out http://www.all-glass.com and look at the sizes available for all-glass tanks...most manufacturers will have similar dimensions.
As far as filtration goes...larger tanks don't necessarily need special filtration, but they do more filtration...typically this is compensated for by using more than 1 filter.
And lastly, if you're handy enough to build a stand, a simple 2x4 frame with some cheap paneling and some trim looks just fine...but don't attempt to build your own unless you really know what you're doing...the last thing you want to do is lose your tank.

I tall 75 would be top heavy though...so easier to tip.

My friends 75 gallon is the same size as a 55 but it sticks out more. Rather than go back about 12 inches with a 55, his goes back about 18 inches. The average person couldn't tell the difference. A matter of fact, it had me fooled for awhile.
My LFS was talking $550 for a 110 gallon acrylic.
Is it possible to get a 75-100 gallon acrylic for less online than in a store? Petco and Petsmart don't have anything larger than 80 gallon. BigAl's doesn't sell large tanks at all.
Does anyone know of good online stores to buy tanks?

When I was looking for my 150g, I found that after shipping costs I would end up paying the same if not more. So I bought it from the lfs instead.

Petsmart (and likely Petco) will order larger tanks for you. they just don't keep them in the store as your average 150G tank isn't a fast mover.
