Open question regarding Heaters

We recently replaced a thermometer and heater as we were having trouble with the thermometer and decided a heater that indicates the temperature on the control would also be a useful function.
Now our tank is sitting at 80'F according to the digital thermometer and the new Heater is set at 24' C...
Obviously something is amiss. The temperature drops about .5'F when the lights go out which is normal.

Is this common for heaters? Other than the digitally controlled type, do most heaters that have #'s on the dial have absolutely no hope of corresponding to the temperature that the thermometer inside of them is actually reading from the tank?

How can it be 26'C and be set at 24'C? I am so upset about this. It seems so risky to set it any lower, but some of our fish would prefer lower temps.. The temperature in the house is around 20'C Why is this happening?

I would trust your thermometer over the heater. The heater is fine, but sometimes the numbers tend to be off. All my tanks are at 79 -80 F but the heaters are set to: 77F, 75F, and 76F. I wouldn't worry about turning down the heat, just watch your thermometer to get the temp you want.

It seems common. After all the heater cant read its own dial to make sure it doesnt heat to 80 degrees even though its set to 78.

Dont get upset over it - just set it to 2 degrees lower if heats the water 2 degrees higher than what the dial says.

My heater i have to set to 79 to have a constant 81 in the tank. No big deal really aslong as the temp stays stabil - which it does.
