I have a 20 gallon long and I'm using white sand for the bottom. It is beautiful but has killed two Whisper HOB's. What brand, kind, whatever filter will withstand the sand and not die on me?
Thanks.

good question, i would think some type of sponge filter or prefilter, i'm getting ready to start a reef tank w/ sand and am kinda wondering about that also.

In my FOWLR setup, I use Emperor 400 power filters. Over the intake, I took a pair of my wife's black nylons and cut the toe section out to put over the intake on the filter to prevent sand intake. So far, so good. Been about 2 years. Hope that helps.

An even easier method of obtaining nylon to use as a filter floss is at a shoe store when they have those little booty things for trying on shoes. My GF nabbed a whole handful of them last time we were there hehe

As far as sand goes, you should be okay with that method. But also, consider the sand you're using. If you get a coarser grade, you won't get any clogging really.

I put filter material over my intake and the filter never got clogged. I have heard good things about the nylon method mentioned, too.

that's odd. i have a 20g long and 2 whisper HOBs on it, and a tan playsand substrait and both my filters are totally fine.
