I'm approaching the end of a fishless cycle on a 20gal tank. I'm setting this up primarily as fun for my young son to look at, and not interested in keeping any "challenging" fish (not ready for the pet death talk yet), just want it to be a fun to watch tank.

Looking for easy-care hardy stocking suggestions. My water is neutral/slightly acid and has low/moderate hardness.

(note: I know the tank needs maintinence, and plan to keep on top of it, I just don't want fussy fish, if that makes sense)

I think some kind of livebearer would be nice, they are very hardy. Maybe a dwarf gourami and a school of cory cats and a snail?

if i were you i wouldn't get livebeasrers only b/c u want low maininence and those guys eat and poop a lot

i'd get a school of 12 danios they provide lots of action- fun to watch and even if they look a little dull in the pet store it's just stress they become very beautiful once they settle in to a well kept tank.

then i'd suggest a pair of dwarf gourami's or pygmis but they'll stay tiny.

and 2 apple snails (feed blanched veggies and they'll also keep the glass clean)

these are great for kids b/c the bioload won't be super big and there are lot's of interesting behaviors to entertail and none of these fish will prefer to hide all the time or get too freaked when he's got his nose pressed up against the glass.

shrimp are fun to watch too- if he thinks they're cool throw in a pack of ghost shrimp

I like my zebra danios too. But they sure are dizzying to watch! They make a nice contrast with neon tetras who are more placid. Together, they also occupy different levels of the tank.

You probably already have the substrate in huh.......most likely not sand I bet.....lol

I would suggest multifasciatus shelldwellers if you had a sand substrate in there with crushed coral. They are a VERY low maintenance fish and they breed and take care of thier fry all on thier own with no interference from you whatsoever. I have a nice community of them in a 20long tank...started with 1male and 2females, now I have over 20 various aged/sized fry darting around in there amongst the parents....with new little ones showing up from time to time. They are always fussing around with the sand and thier shells, piling it all up here and there or there and here...lol.
