Hi

This morning i found a molly floating on its side on the surface which i thought was dead. On inspection it was still alive and full of energy once it moves it just seems to struggle to keep below the surface and upright. Its gills are moving and it fins flapping and it seems a bit bloated compared to the other mollies in the tank.

Any ideas anyone??

Thanks.

Bloating can occur if there is an internal infection of some kind. However, if your molly is floating, my best guess would be a swim bladder problem. I suggest you research that, and see if fits all of the fish’s symptoms. Also if this is a newer fish you may want to go to, or call the fish store and ask to see if any other fish are having the same problem.

After a bit of looking on here yesterday i thought maybe the molly needed burping. So ably assisted by big sis i proceded to burp the patient as instructed from another topic. Put the fish back and within an hour it was able to stay right way up but still floating on top. This morning he was at the bottom of the tank staying still in one corner. Just got back in and he was still at bottom. Put some feed in and he is now swimming around feeding and joining in the aquaurium games with his freinds. Top result!!!!

Does this mean im a qualified fish doctor now me thinks?? :joke:

What do you feed your fish? Maybe supplement their normal food with a veggie food to aid digestion. My livebearers nibble on anything in the tank...algae, algae tabs, lettuce, cucumber, spirulina, etc.
