Has anyone here used the Carbo Plus CO2 by aqauraium products? CO2 without a co2 bottle? hummmm...

Hi bought a unit a few weeks ago - the jury is still out whether this gadget works or not.
I hear conflicting reports as to the efficacy of it and whether it alters the PH levels or not.

Carbo plus isn't very good. I see it as this
Carbo plus equal to crap. You'll end up replacing the carbon blocks every few weeks/months and that will add up.
You'll be better off purchasing a glass diffusor or hagen ladder and making your CO2 through DIY yeast recipes and a bottle.
I made a DIY Guide somewhere around here, you can do a search for it if you don't know how to make CO2 by yourself.

For about the same cost or a little more, you can get a complete pressurized system. As long as you make sure you don't kick the CO2 tank or light it on fire, I'm pretty sure they're pretty safe and cheaper than Carbo.
I used CarboPlus in my office tank (pressurized gas bottles were not allowed) and they worked just fine. Yes it was more expensive than pressurized would have been on operating costs, but if it made it possible for me to have an impressive moderately hgh light planted fish tank with very little work, so I considered it a good deal. Making a blanket statement that "it is crap" to me sounds like someone who does not know the equipment or how to use it, nor understand that in the real world we cannot always do what our first or optimum choice might be, and that there are always alternate options available. Closed minds are remarkable things, especially in a hobby which should be knowledge-based.
The units are suited best to very moderately sized tanks. They do deplete the KH in the tank while in operation, but if your water is at least moderately hard on KH, your standard weekly large partials will replenish it easily. Alternately you can use aragonite in a mesh bag in a canister filter (I did). It is best to monitor the KH i ntanks where the units are in use, but that needs doing to check the CO2 concentration anyway, so is no extra work.

Ive read about the carboplus block thing. I love the idea, and I would use them, if the replacement blocks werent 30-40 bucks a pop. I dont have an extra 30-40 bucks a month to waste on fancy alka-seltzer. =P (i know its not alkaseltzer)

The block in my setup lasted 6-8 months, which is still not cheap, but far from monthly replacement.
