I'm ready for fish now and not sure of what I want. I really like the fancy guppies(male). How many should I get? I was thinking, like, 5. Also, what can I put with them? I have a really bright colorful tank. I would like to find something pretty like the fancy guppie, but not sure what. Any suggestions? Also, can anyone tell me when I need to add the aqua safe? Thanks!

You can get 2-3 different kinds (colors) of guppies, but try to get about 2 females to every male.

Well, I don't want to get my little 10-gallon over stocked! I ended up getting 3 male fancy guppies (and the lfs guy threw in a baby for free because it survived.) So all together, 4 guppies, one yellow, one orange, and one multi-colored(not real sure what the baby will look like-if the glass fish don't eat it.) And I found the most beautiful painted glass fish. One is lime green, one is hot pink, and the other is black. They are awesome and go great with my bright color scheme!!!

Check out this link to learn all about painted glass fish

You probably didn't know about the practice of artificialy dyeing fish with injections of toxic pigments when you bought your pretty fish.. . . so its ok.

Good news is that there are lots of great colorful fish in nature and the friendly people here can help you figure out what will work great for you.

I don't understand the dyeing concept? It makes me sad to know that my fish were dyed!! So, do they keep their color forever or do they lose it? The problem I ran into was that I didn't really find very many colorful fish at the lfs around here. Can you maybe suggest some?

they take a large guage needle (think about a human being stabbed with a turkey baster, comparatively, its the same size) and toxic dye is injected under the skin. the dye causes the fish to become sickly, leads to many diseases. the dye is also temporary and will fade in a few weeks/months leaving you with a very sick fish that will probably die early.

most fish in the pet stores are rather bland in color while they are there. you need to bring them home and get them comfortable in a stable, healthy environment with good food and they will brighten up and be beautiful.

ridiculous

I just found out about this fish dying b.s. and it's the most ridicuolus thing I've ever heard. The fish go through losing their slime coat, then are forced to (hopefully) grow it back. Even after all of that, the color generally only lasts for about a month or two. No good, no good. IMO, I wouldn't shop at a LFS that sells dyed fish.

posted this while previous two posts were put up, sorry for the repeat.

If I had known my fish were dyed, I definitely would've went somewhere else. I won't go back!!! I like the plain glass fish too and the glass catfish. I just hope they survive after learning this. Is there anything I need to do to help keep them from getting that disease from this???
