First, a bit of background info:
I've had my ornate bichir (I know how big he will grow) for about a week. He is currently in my 55 gallon with 6 zebra danios and a German Blue Ram, who will be moving as son as the bichir grows some more. He is happily eating shrimp pellets.

Well, anyone who has ever kept zebras know they like food. A lot. When I give the bichir his pellet, they will often attempt to steal bites of it, or in the case tonight, the entire thing. The bichir, who guards his food like it was his life, takes snaps at them if they get too close. Today, when a zebra got to close, it GRABBED IT BY THE HEAD and swung it around. Its only about 2.5 inches, but it had the head in its mouth and was holding on like crazy. The zebra got free, and looks OK.

It was the most amazing thing I've seen in my fishkeeping career.

haha. that sounds really cool.

If you like your zebra danios and ram then you should move them to another tank. They will eventually become food for the bichir. I lost a clown loach to an ornate which I thought was too big to be eaten.

Oops, I meant to put in the first post that the danios and ram would be moving as soon as the bichir grew a little more.

Thanks for bringing that up.

I had my 3" long senegalus catch in the "fly" a big pregnant female guppie that was half his size. the bichir took her by the middle of the body so he could not swallow it, but he was carrying her as a chihuahua dog with a large bone. Finally he sat her free, but she was dizzy ans became an easy snack for the clown knife.

I've had two differnt bichirs that made ''pets'' out of guppies. One of my senegals had a pet guppy and my lapradei had a pet guppy ths went on for months.Other guppies were food but not the adopted ones until one day well you know -Anne

Cool stories, everyone.
