My current tank (a 5 gallon hex) was looking a bit dirty.........my filter had packed up.

Chewie (my betta) and the "2 fellas" (two small cory cats) were looking none too pleased with me.

So off I went to get a replacement filter.

I left with a Juwel Rio 125 !! (and a replacement filter....to keep em happy in the mean time!)

So - I have set up the tank downstairs all looking good. Before I start my fishless cycle (as done previously - highly recommended btw)
...as I only have 3 small fish currently - do I really need to cycle the tank or can i add them now and just SLOWLY add new fish over the next few months?

I cant imagine these 3 small fish could produce enough ammonia if they tried to send the tank into chaos.
But always best to ask!

In my opinion, I think you would be ok to add the fish to your new aquarium.

But I would add any gravel or tank decorations from your 5 gallon to help speed the cycling process.

Also, keep track of ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates to ensure that none reach dangerous levels while your existing fish are in there.

Those are 3 very small fish for that larger aquarium so you should be fine. I also would back off on their feeding for a week or so. Just a tiny bit will do.

i agree with yuccapatrol, even take the packed up filter from the old tank and put it in the filter box of the new tank.

I'm doing the same thing. (Sort of) Since I bought a larger tank I figured a few small fish would be fine. So far its been 3 or 4 weeks now and all of my Tigers are doing great! (It's tough to resist the urge to add more though, as the tank is so bare!)

and once your new tank is all settled, get some more cories!
