I have had one of the above fish for about two years and he has been very healthy, however today i noticed that he wa having a problem keeping himself level and he kept sinking to the bottom. he has got worse during the day and is now lying on the bottom. From time to time he comes to the surface and gulps for air . He then sinks to the bottom. All the other fish are healthy.

is there anything I can do .

many thanks

sounds like some sort of swim bladder problem- which i've never delt with but my guess is it has something to do with some sort of infection

the best all around cure i know is salt dips

try to catch him with as little stress as possible- wait for his air run and scoop him out before he see's you coming

now as i've never had to treat an internal infection i would recomend you start another thread with this title: "best way to treat an internal infection?"

i've heard of a few things but i can't vouch for any of them- obviously

soaking food in garlic oil

medicated food

mardel medications- the only one i've used was for fin rot but my impression is they make very good products other than salt this is the only med i've ever used

good luck! i hope we can find a cure for him

I had a gourami sick with fungus and that was the way he acted until I fouind out what was happening. Took me too long to remedy the situation. Look for any sign of darkening in his skin or red streaks in his fins. This could be a sign for an internal infection.

However, to my undestanding, blue gouramies normal life span is around 2 years when kept in good conditions. If I'm wrong, please someone correct me, but probably your fish is looking for some rest. :o

i'm pretty sure when properly kept they will live longer than that

what ever is wrong start doing salt dips while you figure it out- they help imensly and even if they won't be the ultimate cure(which they often are) they will help until you can take other action
