I've read somewhere in this forum that once your tank hits a ph of 6 that it will trigger a mini-cycle.

Since I have began using diy CO2 my tank will drop down to 6 especially in the morning (obviously). My KH is 5, GH is 8 or 9. I've not seen any ill effects, I've been injecting co2 for 3 weeks now.

Can someone explain the ph6 mini cycle to me?

Thanks,
Brett

The pH dropping to 6.0 is only an indicator that something may be wrong, and it only applies to a tank where the KH (carbonate hardness) also drops to 0.

Because KH is what keeps your pH stable, as the KH drops, so does the pH. When the KH hits 0, the pH is usually at 6.0

Once the KH hits 0, there are no bicarbonates available for natural consumption and the biofilter dies. Thus, the term pH Crash.

A lot of people have no idea what their KH is and the only clue that the KH has been depleted is that sudden drop in pH and cloudy water.

Your pH can drop below 6.0, so long as your KH remains, IMO, 3 or better. Yours is 5 and fine.
