How many more fish can I put in a 90 gallon?

I just got a new 90 gallon that I'm putting an oscar, a geophagus hybrid, a palmas bichir, a ropefish, a redtail shark, and a pair of tinfoil barbs in. Can I put anymore fish in there or is this the limit. I was thinking another bichir(buettikoferi or ornate) or maybe a red devil or a green terror or a fancy pleco.

i think your already pushing overstocking.

i someday plan on haveing a 180g tank with only one oscar, 2 fire eels, and a trinidad pleco (grows to about 12")

tinfoil barbs really should be in schools, and they get 12-14" long, the bichir should be ok, though your oscar might eat it, they only get 12" long or so.

the ropefish might also become a snack for the oscar, and they get up to 3 feet long, and are very slender. remember, oscars will eat anything that will fit in their mouths.

i don't know anything about geophagus.

the red tail shark would probably be fine. but i think you would soon find out that a 90 gallon really is not all that large

How big are those fish right now that you are putting in there? I have always gone by the one inch per gallon rule myself. If they are all around the same size then I wouldn't worry about any of them getting eaten, you can always move them as they grow before that happens :) .

the inch per gallon rule should be viewed more as a VERY loose guidline that doesn't apply to more than half the fish commonly kept by aquarists.

think of it this way.

a 10 inch oscar vs. 10 neon tetras.

a 10 inch oscar has the mass of a couple HUNDRED neon tetras, produces about as much waste as a couple hundred neon tetras. the absolute bare minimum for a single oscar is 55 gallons, and even that is usually pushing it.

it should really be thought of "If i have 30 inches of fish in a 20 gallon aquarium, i'm probably overstocked"

however, you can overstock if done properly. like i am eventually going to end up with 28.5 inches of fish in an 18.5 gallon aquarium (20 gallon long) yet my tank will not be overstocked, because i'm choosing fish very carefully and they are all quite small fish that occupy different areas of the tank, and i keep up with water changes religiously.

10" Oscar
9" Tinfoil barbs
5" Redtail Shark
13" Ropefish
8" Palmas
7" Geophagus

They are all being temporarily housed together in a 55 gallon w/ very good filtration and frequent water changes. And besides a few bites on the tinfoils by the oscar there has been no problems and the fish seem very happy, and the fish have been in the 55 for several months now.
And I'm pretty sure an oscar can't eat a full grown palmas bichir.

yeah, that 55 is totally overstocked, and the 90 will be as well, but at least the 90 is a step up. but you should really be shooting for a 150.

A fancy pleco would make a great addition.

you know what, sorry, but stop giving people bad advice. you've been here only a few hours and your totally going against the general oppinion of this forum. adamfs12 is already almost dangerously overstocked, and will still be quite overstocked with a 90g. and your actually encouraging him to ADD a very dirty fish that does nothing to help the situation.

so far, every one of your posts that i have seen have been bad advice. i know nothing about you or your fish keeping expirience. i would like to know what size tanks you have with what stock, how many years you have been keeping fish.

i've been keeping fish for only about 6 months, but i've done more than my share of research and most of the advice i give is just things i parrot from those on the forums with much more expirience, things that i've taken to heart and agree with.

Calm down rockabillchick, forums are for advice not to start arguments. I have been in this hobby for 9+ years and I do my best like everybody else. Thank you.
