1. im treating one of my tanks for ich (using heat and salt). and of course he got a cut on his head. its healing different than the last cut he got. its actually swollen looking this time, and im slightly worried. should i be?

2. (same tank) my JD is bigger than he used to be. and he still likes to try and squeeze behind the powerheads and keeps getting cut up from it. i really wish they wernt attached to an ugf. is is possible to take it out with out horribly pissing off my fish? or could i just remove the pvc tubes and just leave the plates underneath...or would that just create more of a bacterial slew? i remember pulling one out of a tank recently and god that stench. i will never use an unf again.

thank you all again for you wisdom :)

Yes, go to the doctor ASAP. There is a lot of bacteria floating around in there that may not be friendly to some people.

Make sure you tell them about the tank.

Sorry, can't help with the UGF.

I think it's the fish that has a cut on it's head Roan :)

If the fish is hiding behind the tube you might need more stucture in the tank. It sounds counter intuitive, but the more places fish have to hide, the less they hide. One of the biggest mistakes I see in aquascaping is not enough structure.

I know it will be a pain, but pull that UGF out. Put the fish in a bucket (this is the only time i recommend doing this because you will release a huge amount of crap that can kill fish). pull the plate. Let everything settle, and then do 75% WC and gravel vac. Acclimate fish to tank as if you were bringing him home for the first time. UGF and JD will not work long term as the second the jd digs down to the plate (or even gets close) all the water will move through this section (path of least resistance) and dramatically reduce the effectiveness of the filter. Good Luck. Ohh run your new filter for a few weeks before ditching the ugf

Hehe. I'm not sure how one would cut their head in a tank. :D

A true aquarist knows how his tanks look from the inside. Sticking the head is the way yo go!!! :joke:

I would treat the tank with quickcure as well to battle the infection/whatever it is in the cuts. One drop per gallon every day unless you have some "quickcure sensitive" fish in there (which a jack dempsey is not). Turn the temperature up a few degrees if you haven't already. Also, change some water each day while you are treating, cleaner water makes healing faster.

I would ditch the under gravel filter. As already said, the jack dempsey will dig it up. What size aquarium is this? I'm guessing that it is somewhere between 50 and 90 gallons since it houses a jack dempsey. On a 50 gallon a penguin 350 or emperor 400 would be great, I would move up to two of these filters if the tank is much bigger. Run the filters for a month or so before taking out the under gravel.

ROFL ROFLROFLFROLFROFLROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am SUCH a doofus sometimes!!!! That'll teach me to post a 5:17am when I haven't had my first cuppa yet.

HAHHAHAHAH

However, in my defense if you read the word "hand" for "head" -- and that's real easy to do at 5am -- then you can see where I was coming from. There's no mention of a fish in that first sentence.

ack! i guess it was my stupidity to not specify it was the fish! lol

i have melafix(ive used it before and it worked like a charm), would that be any use with the salt? im kinda worried about adding too much stuff to the tank at one time.

oh and i have a lot of hiding spots, but behind the powerhead is his "top of tank" hiding spot. i have plants floating up there....whatever.

i guess once the ick is gone and his head is healed im ripping out the ugf. and while im at it. im changing substrates...no more gravel holes for me!
