So if I stick you in a closet for 5 years, is that living "fine"?

first, piranha are schooling fish and do best in groups of 4-6. second, this species grows to 8-12 inches. you cannot maintain even one in a ten gallon tank, let alone a school of them.
as for living for 5 years in five gallons? i strongly doubt that. a fish can "survive" some mistreatment but if you're going to keep fish as pets, it becomes your responsibility to maintain them such that they thrive, not survive. you might survive living in a closet for months, you could pee in a bucket, and once a day someone would slide some food under the door and empty your bucket. think you'd live a long and healthy life? well neither would a 12 inch fish in ten gallons.

Your going to need a much larger tank.

Adjusting to envirorment = Pretty much torture on the fish.
Conduct an experiment: Take a young child and stick him in a 5ftx5ft box, lets see how he adjusts.
(I know its a harsh comparison, but its set on the same basics. Yea, maybe the oganism's body can adjust to not grow, but it was meant to grow, which equals spine problems, muscle problems, and a plethora of other condtions.)

Read this article about the red bellied pirahna. It says what they need...and how they SHOULD be cared for.

Do you really believe that fish have the ability to stay naturally small in a space almost less than its natural size?
fIsHy13
03-02-2006, 3:54 PM
I think you should not get any piranas at all, seeing as you must be a newbie and they are extremely hard fish to care for.
StingXfactor009
03-02-2006, 4:17 PM
Actually im not a newbie i was just saying my opinions. I have a 29 gallon with a picus cat 7 tiger barbs and gourami, and a sun cat. All living perfectly.

Ill probly end up just getting a couple of mollies.

Yea... its a little bit rude to tell someone they are a newbie when you really don't know. It could have just been mis-information he got over the years or something about pirahans.
Anywhoo, a 10gallon tank can become an awesome community tank with very small fish. I know a lot of people like the bigger fish, but I personally love very small fish.
My 10gallon has the following (just to give you an idea):
2 Albino corys
2 Bronze corys
3 Zebra Danios
2 Honey Flame gouramis
I plan on adding maybe 2 more fish, but this is only because I am very strict with my cleaning process, so overstocking by a few inches really wont be a problem for me.
A newbie can easily be someone who has kept fish for awhile if they are filled with mis-information. And still believing that fish "grow" to their environment = newbie to me.
Why not stick some pirahana in the 29 gallon tank. I am sure it will learn to live with those other fish. (that would be sarcasm of course).
A fish can't choose its instincts anymore than it can choose how its genes work.

Let me tell you what happened when I put 5 small ones in a 29 gallon tank. They lived "fine" until they got about 5 inches and then they started eating each other. I ended up with 2 left. I have pictures if you do not believe me. Anyways you could put a couple 1 inch piranhas in a 10 gallon for like 6 months and you probably would have no problems. Past that I think you would need a bigger tank.

I'm just saying after getting feedback from your original question, all you started doing was throwing everyone's opinions/advice right back at them. It's like you posed a question, then didn't even care to accept the information unless it was in agreement with your own. That's the difference between a newbie and a possible bad fish owner. A newbie will ask questions and learn. A possible bad fish owner will do whatever they want to do and then b*tch to everybody when things don't work out their way. I do have a great idea for you. Since you obviously want to grossly overload your 10 gallon tank, I'd recommend buying 10 piranha (cause I'm sure you've heard from a friend of a friend that the rule is 1" per gallon, and that should be good enough, right?), starving them for 5-6 days (which I'm sure you could manage), and then stick your head up in there and finally get an idea of how they REALLY feel about your fishkeeping skills. Troll, indeed!
Don't you EVER question my fishkeeping ability. Or if you do, please do it in a manner that has some kind of positive effect or intention. Man, I hate it when people push me to the negative...

Oddly enough he is asking about Mollies in a 10 gallon in another thread. Oh my. Maybe the pirahana will school with them. My friend's tank was like that.

Actually all the fish in my 29 gallon are 3 month or older. I feed them 2 times a day, never over feeding them. Ill take just as good care for the mollies. And yes im probly alot better fish keeper than you.

You have a life eh?
Well let's see here. I've been to scotland, England, France, Spain, Italy, Malta, Egypt, Bahrain, Turkey, Israel, Hawaii. I've watched bull fights in Barcelona, Rode on gondalas in Venice, walked through the ancient streets of Pompeii and Jerusalem. Swam in the Dead Sea, waded through Loch Ness, walked through the sands of the Sahara.
I've jumped out of airplanes over 14 thousand feet in the air and accumulated over 10 minutes of free fall time falling through our atmosphere at 120 mph. I've gone scuba diving in the Virgin Islands, walked across cooling lava flows on the Main Island of Hawaii.
I've pulled old men, women, and children from the Adriatic Sea that were fleeing genocide, launched tomahawk cruise missiles at terrorists, chased down oil smugglers and burned their ships.
So tell me how much of a life you have little boy.
