Nice story with this fish. I saw him at a South Jersey LFS with no price tag on the tank. Someone just dropped him off a few hours earlier for no money. No manager was in to price him so I offered $30 and took him home. Wonder what the story was with this fish and its former owner? Someone's trash is my treasure.
Pics dont do him justice. His fins turn green and purple when I feed him.

Mine looks just like yours only it has the THICK black spots running accross its body. What is the difference between the two?
Usually thickness means a male but spots generally stay with a female or a subdominant male.
NYQULs fish has the markings of a Hyperdominant male, beautiful fish.
How big is yours Eastcoast?

Its about 4 1/2 to 5 inches. hes in a 90 gallon right now with an oscar the same size... But im just holding the oscar for a friend whos moving. And the jag DOES NOT like the oscar in his tank.
I originally bought 2 managuenses. But the other one grew at half the rate of this one even now it is still only about 2- 2 1/2 inches. So i figured the bigger was the male and the other was the female. But the one i have in the 90 gallon as a serious temper and digs like an S.O.B By far my fav. fish.

young fish that size will usualy show the large horizontal row of spots, but if it is a male it will usualy lose them as it grow older. females usal keep the spots.

Am i right in guessing that th fish i kept is a male because it grew twice the rate that the other one did? Or could that just be genetics?

By the way NYQYL what kind of lighting do you have? I like.
My lighting is standard, not sure exactly what it is. It came with the hood on my 120 gal ALL Glass Aquarium.
I am planning to breed this guy in the future. I really like his pattern. I wanna mix in a darker female if I can find one that will be able to stand up to his wrath.

lol, yea be careful whene breding cauase you may lose the female, if you dont take her out soon enough and at the right time.
Excellent fish tho really nice coloring.
This fish and my female Midas are trying to breed. The Midas laid eggs but they ate them.
