Gouramis and White algae

Ok, quick question:

I have a white film-like algae (atleast i think its algea) growing on one of my decorations in my tank. My 2 new honey flame gouramis love picking at it and eating it, almost to the point where they will pass on flake food to get to the white stuff.

Is this a problem? or is it acutally a good source of food for them?

(BTW: quick little tidbit - I was watching one of the gouramis swim around the tank, and he was upset that a cory had taken his hiding spot away from him.

So what did he do? Snuck up behind the cory, and used one of his little tentacle/fin things to touch the cory, thus making the cory flip out and swim away! Was the funniest thing i've ever seen one of my fish do.)

Anyone?

(Sorry to reply to my own post, but it was becoming lost)

same problem

same problem here I placed a piece of draft wood in my tank it started to grow this floating hair white algea, I saw it was getting out of control on the wood and tossed the wood. But now it's invested itself onto some of my plants one kind of plant and my algea pellets is like fretilazer for it. where ever a algea pellet falls that white stringy stuff grows like it's on crack. At first my fished loved it then I think it started to make them sick. I have no idea what it is, I'm about to clean the whole tank and rinse everything.

White algae on wood and some decorations is quite normal and will go away after a while. Some fish will eat it, yes.

The stuff growing on your leftover food is not algae, it's mold. Remove all uneaten food before it starts to mold or it will foul your water. Vacumming the gravel when you do your weekly water changes will help with this.

Hydra ????????

Could be that it isn't algea at all but rather Hydra. gourami's are said to eat Hydra, so that was my first thought. The first time I ever got Hydra I thought it was white algea as well. A little investigation revealed that it was in fact hydra. A magnifying glass and a google search for aquarium hydra will tell you a lot.

Really? I had no idea gouramis ate that, so I figured algae. I gotta Yahoo! that myself.

Thanks Dave!
