Aquarium Salt while fertilizing?

For a long time, I never added aquarium salt to my tanks. But after trying it out and seeing a huge difference in my fish (no diseases or ich ever since), I am never wanting to be without it again. I was noticing though that for a lot of fertilizing purposes we use things like Nu-Salt and Epsom Salt. I'm no expert, so I was wondering if I should even bother with aquarium salt anymore, or should I continue the usual tbsp/5g? Anyone know anything about this? All these salts are making me nervous.

Sorry if it's a stupid question.

Sorry I cant really answer your question; but I think I could add a bit too it; hopefully someone on here knows what their talking about :D
I too have been using salt for years, the same 1tbs/5gal; never had a single bug since then…
HOWEVER as of just a few days ago while doing some reading; I found an article stating that salt shouldn’t be used on a planted tank at all! Something about osmotic pressure on the plants….. anyway so basically adding to the question from Fernando; should salt be used on a planted tank? What are peoples experiences with it?

Furthermore (according to an a friend of mine taking Ichthyology at the local uni); salt in a tropical aquarium is supposed to have far less effect than we think it does; she was saying that 90% of the effects of salt use could be gleaned from just adding one tbs to 300gals of water… Now who am I to argue with a scientist; but what else have people out their read? Is salt REALLY that effective, granted I haven’t had a bug in years; but that could very well be due to other factors.

It is great for short-term use in treating outbreaks, but you definitely do not want to use it constantly. If the only way to keep disease out of your tank is constant use of salt then there must be some underlying problem there.

No, you do not need salt (NaCl) in your tank.

Walker, could you ask your friend to explain this "90% of the effects of salt use could be gleaned from just adding one tbs to 300gals of water" a little more in depth?
