Hi,

I have a 35g tank with 2 ottos and 2 Blue Gouramis. I would like to add more Gouramis but I am not sure how many I can add. I like to add the Gold Gouramis and the Opaline. Please advise. Thank you,

blue gouramis can get up to 6 inches long and are usually very agressive. i would actually take one out and add a school of smaller fish and a few more otos. you could do a few pearl gouramis instead, they tend to be the more docile and can get along with each other, but they get about as large as the blues.

all in all, gouramis are very agressive and should not be kept in groups, even if they are different types. except for pearls. though with some of the dwarf varieties you can do a male and 2 or more females if you have a large tank and lots of hiding spots.

I have a few Honey Flame gouramis that are awesome to watch! They stay small, and are ok by themselves (Although I would say get atleast 2, because I bought 1 first, and he acted a little odd, but when I added a 2nd one, he became normal)

Actually they can be kept in groups. Keep a nice group of 8 or 9 three-spots (3 males and 5 or 6 females) in a 100 gallon aquarium and it will usually work out fine. Or even 4 or more females can sometimes be kept together in a large tank. However in a 35 gallon aquarium, having only one is better as you pointed out. I think mostly the reason that people think gouramis should not be kept together is because they try too few in too small of an aquarium. Keep two and one will usually dominate the other. Keep three and one will usually dominate the other two, etc. I bet most people who try this do it in an aquarium smaller than 75 gallons.
