I trim my Jungle vals by cutting them just below the water line. Never had any dying leaves, maybe some browning where the leaves where cut.

I've also tried trimming the top of my vals when they got too long, and the leaf eventually rotted and turned brown, starting at the cut place. Just "trimming" from the top didn't work for me either...

i cut mine like grass. take a pair of scissors and leave about 3" from root to top. i stagger it quite a bit to leave it "wild" looking.

I always cut on an angle. That way the "pointiness" of the leaf tops remain.
