I had the opportunity to pickup a 25g tank and stand from a buddy that was in a bind. He used it as a freshwater tank, and I would prefer to go saltwater with it.

Today the wife and I went out and picked up a book, some gravel, salt to mix in, and some testers.

The stuff from my buddy already included a heater, hood setup with 15w light, and a penguin 170 bio wheel. If I am missing anything else, please let me know. From talking to a couple people the bio wheel will be fine for the pump portion.

I of course want to get the tank completely safe before adding fish, but I am getting conflicting stories on to start the tank up with the gravel now and do the treatment, then do the salt addition. Or do the gravel last in that process along with adding any other objects we wish to place inside.

I want to nail the steps down in a solid manner, so that I don't have to re-do anything. I want to get it up quickly so I can start purchasing some fish. :)

Any help for this newbie would be greatly appreciated!

In a small tank like that, one scenario is to place your sand and decorations in the tank. After you get it semi setup so you don't get into the "how much salt?" quandry. A easy to make salt water is to put gallon markers on your buckets/bucket, add about 1/2c per gallon of water, mix, and adjust sg from there. Setup filtration etc. throw in a coctail shrimp, and cram for the test, read, read, did I say read.
