I am going to treat one of my tanks for parasites and am wondering if i have to remove the carbon from my filter. I have a fluval104 that I quit changing the carbon on 6 months ago. I left the carbon in for added biological filtration and did not want to take the filter apart unless I have to. I thought that being 6 months old the carbon would no longer be active and I could leave it in. I clean all the filter media every 6 weeks or when the flow decreases and it will not need doing for a few more weeks. Thanks in advance for any help .

yes, if your carbon is 6 months old its no longer active and you can medicate and leave it in there.

the way carbon works is that it bonds with various chemicals and those chemicals become permanently bonded to the carbon. once all the "spots" are taken up in the carbon and its fully bonded with the chemicals in your water, its deactivated and it can no longer bond with anything else in the water. the bonds are permanent.

you can safely add medication and leave the carbon alone.

Thanks for your help. That is what I thought also but I wanted to double check. Thanks again.

rockabilly is right in theory but why take the chance? I would take the 15 minutes or so and remove the carbon. If your fish are sick why risk weakening the treatment if any carbon is still active?
