I had to replace one of my 65w 6700k lamps. All my lfs had was 8000k 10000k and actinics. He recommended the 8000k replacement. Looks strong in the red spectrum sitting beside the remaining 6700k lamp. Is this lamp ok for a planted tank or should I return it and order another 6700?

Most dual CF setups come with 6700K and 10000K, it covers a wider spectrum.

If you're going to return the 8000K I'd do it for the 10000K.

This is a 50 gallon tank with two lamps. One 65 watt fixture sits on the left side of the tank and the other on the right. As of right now the left side of the tank is greenish (6700k) and the right side is reddish (8000k). I have had good success with the 6700k setup but I need to go with one or the other. Whats better coralife 6700k or allglass 8000k? Are there any problems associated with switching spectrums in an established tank (algae blooms, plant deaths, etc.)?

They're both full spectrum so I doubt there would be much difference in plant response but I can't gaurantee it.
Zoomed's Floramax is 8500K and I always liked them. I've thought of going with the 8000K allglass (6700 is a little washed out for me).
I'd say if you like it, go with it.

if you're trying to grow plants . . . which i'm guessing you are 6700K is what you want

it is in a the best spectrum for plants to utilize-

80 and 100 are not as good for plant purposes they're for the human eye's pleasure. you'll get more algae with the higher K

EDIT: 80 is red? i didn't realize that- if so plants love red

I think I'll try the 8000k for a year and see what happens. This lighting kind of reminds me of a triton tube I once used. Must be a similar spectrum.

I agree, the 6700 lamp does look a little washed out compared to this one. The fish seem to be more colorful with this lamp also. I just hope the plants do as well.

On plantedtank.net a lot of people recommend bulbs in the 8,000K range. They say the plants grow as well under it, and they like the way it looks better. So choose which you think looks better :)
