raising pH without chemicals...

Does anyone know how much crushed coral can be added to raise the pH a certain amount? Is there a formula or do you just add some, leave for a week, test, add more, etc. Anything else that can be used besides crushed coral?

i think most folks add it incrementally until they get to the desired level

get a filter bag and add a bit to the bag a little at a time and put it in one of your filters.
 
everyones water chemistry is different and the 'environment' is different as well with regard to substrate, decorations, tank size, number of fish .. thus, there is no 'formula'. trial and trial again is really the only way to find your level.
 
when you do mess with your ph make sure you take it slowly.. dont just add bunch of crushed corals at one time.
 
Interesting I was told the amount won't matter much other than the less you add the slower it will raise your PH.

I was told that it will disolve faster the lower your PH and slower the closer your PH is to 7.

I just dumped a bunch into my filter :rolleyes: oops... But after about a week my PH was right at 7 and stayed there.

I did the same thing for my vivarium (no fish in it though) and had the same results.
 
Coral can only raise the pH so much regardless of how much you put in there. In my brackish tank the entire substrate was coral but the pH only increased from 7.4 to 8.1

And yes, you are correct that the lower the pH, the faster it will dissolve. What was your pH before that, 6.3?
