I bought a breeding pair of convicts in order to provide some healthy feeders for my oscar and jack dempsey tank.
The first batch of fry are now about 6 weeks old and ready to be fed to the oscar, but I had to euthanize my oscar this week. I had thought I could rehabilitate an Oscar with HITH, so I took him from someone to try to do this. I had success, he enjoyed the clean water in my 75 gal, but after 9 months of remission, his HITH began to get a lot worse and I did not want to put him through it anymore.
So I figured my Jack Dempsey and firemouth would still eat the convict babies, but they don't seem to care for live foods. . . . My Jack is so wimpy that he acts afraid of a cichlid pellet!
Fortunately, my LFS will buy some of them, but I know they will not want all of them.
I just fed the second batch of week-old fry to the older fry and I can certainly say that convicts love their little brothers and sisters, but I would not trust them as babysitters!
:
I guess the convict pair will be going back to the store before they spawn again and I hope that my Jack and Firemouth decide that baby convicts are tasty.
I guess the moral of the story is: Be careful what you wish for! I wished for lots of little fish and got it with a pair of convicts!
